A cultural festival downtown

The past weekend, Cancun had the honor to receive a dance festival which can exclusively be seen in Oaxaca Mexico, this time bringing a bit of their show to our location, yes we are talking about the Guelagetza, a cheerful and colorful festival.

The Guelaguetza its an ancient tradition that honors Centeotl the goddess of the corn, the word itself has a meaning from the Zapotec culture and translates as ̈exchange of gifts and services ̈ that in the end signifies the bilateral ways of the people.

The event started at 5 pm with the Calenda, where people could join this parade that lasted around 5 blocks, so that at 6 they can actually see the dance show, this parade featured several typical dressed characters like Chinas oaxaqueñas, valles centrales, Sones bravios de San Pedro Pochutla, Sones Chatinos de Santa catarina Juqila, Sierra sur, Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Flor de Piña, alto de papaloapan.

The spectacle was brought thanks to the Institute of arts & culture of Benito Juarez, and it was held in downtown Cancun in the Palapas park, everything took place in the afternoon, to avoid striking sun for the day.

At arrival, several things were noticeable for the guests, first, a music Band called Domani, who were complemented by the Ballet company Xochiquetzal, that with bright colors, baskets, flowers, and some incredible dance moves, delighted all the spectators in house.

Another folkloric Dance company from Tlaxico Oaxaca was present during the performance of the Chinas Oaxaqueñas, and are an icon for the festivities back at their hometown.

Over 100 dancers and musicians travel from the south of Mexico to enchant this amazing show.

Food

Delicious Food from the state of Oaxaca, where handmade during this festival, over 70 typical dishes as buñuelos, tejate, chocolate, stuffed water peppers with cheese, rice & chepiles, chicatanas sauce, sopa de guias, tasajo, tlayudas. Chapulines (grasshoppers ) tamales, Mole to name the more popular ones.

You could also try snacks like corn on the cob, handmade ice cream, iced coffee, and other sweets and drinks.

There were also craft stands, with traditional dresses, jewelry, black clay ceramics and other souvenirs available for purchase, although 95 % of the people going to the festival where Latin Americans, you could still see tourists enjoying this showcase of the Mexican culture.
